Exams Contingency Day 2026
The special date in the UK exam timetable designed for emergencies is called the contingency day.
This day is included in the national exam timetable for GCSE, AS, and A-Level candidates to ensure that if a major disruption, such as severe weather, public health incidents, or national emergencies, affects the scheduled exam, it can be moved to this date.
Key Facts about the Contingency Day:
- 2026 Contingency Day: The date for the 2026 summer exam series is 24 June 2026.
- Availability: Students must remain available until this date, even if their final exam takes place earlier.
- Purpose: It is not for individual missed exams or personal resits, but rather for nation-wide or region-wide emergencies that cause a shift in the timetable.
- Additional Sessions: Sometimes, awarding bodies introduce extra half-day contingency sessions during the exam period, in addition to the final day.
If you are a student, it is strongly advised not to book travel or holidays before this date, as you may be required to sit a rescheduled exam.
