Students from St Augustine’s CE High School had their work sent to Antarctica in a yearly project by UK Polar Network.
For Antarctica Day, Malak, Khaled, Safaa and Yousif, all pupils in Year 8, designed inspirational flags “in the interest of all mankind”, which travelled to Halley VI Research Station.
The research station deals with observation of a climate sensitive zone and provides advice to the Government on the impact of space weather on UK infrastructure and business.
The flags were taken over by Millie Bond, a meteorological observer with the British Antarctic Survey. Millie’s picture was taken outside of the research station where she works at and our students were thrilled to find out that their flags made it.
Khaled, one of our year 8 pupils who participated, said: “I found it fun to use colours to represent different things. For example: Orange represents Global Warming and the blue and the white represents the cold.” The pupils all had fun and were super excited to learn more and have their flags travel so far.
