Our School Library

Our library plays an important role in shaping our students’ futures.  The library provides a welcoming, rich and diverse learning environment for the whole school community.   The library supports our students achieve their dreams and secure their future ambitions by providing access a suite of computers, non- fictions texts and fictions texts which complement the curricular needs of our students as well as encourage them to read for pleasure. 

Role of Student Librarians

Organising student librarians to help with the library not only ensures the smooth day-to-day running of the library, but also helps develop a sense of responsibility, achievement and self-esteem in children. Student librarian duties are carried out to a maximum of 2 per week during their break and lunch times, following a rota that is on display in the library.

Librarian duties:

  • Help in the library at set times agreed with the librarian
  • Shelve fiction books in A-Z Author surname order
  • Aid in the issuing and the returning of resources
  • Help other students find what books they are looking for
  • Recommend reading books
  • Support students on the computers 
  • Any other jobs which help the librarian

Student librarians are:

  • Reliable
  • Kind
  • Hardworking
  • Honest
  • Cheerful
  • Sensible
  • Enthusiastic

Student librarians also:

  • Enjoy working with computers
  • Are willing to help others
  • Have an interest in books
  • Enjoy thinking on your feet
  • Enjoy helping other people
  • Have good communication skills

When are we open?

The school library is open from 8:30am until 4:30pm every school day.

  • All students may use the library from 8.30am – 9.45 am and after school until 4:30pm.
  • The library is open to all key stages during their break and lunch times. 
  • Students may be brought in by a subject teacher during a lesson time to use the library to do research, borrow books or use the computers.
  • Students are allowed to borrow up to 4 books at a time for up to 2 weeks.  They can renew books for another 2 weeks if no one has reserved the books they have borrowed.

Reading Cloud

The library at St Augustine’s believes that reading for pleasure is fundamental when it comes to literacy, student attainment and student wellbeing. The Reading cloud library management system that we use has been on a mission to help schools promote reading for pleasure for over 30 years.

By using Reading Cloud our students are able to log in at home, browse our catalogue and reserve any books to be collected from school.  Students who log in to their own accounts and then they can read other students’ book reviews as well as leave their own book reviews.

You will be pleased to know that you can now add the reading cloud app to your phones, tablets and other electronic devices. Once you have logged in, it will save and you can access the library catalogue at the touch of a button.
