Student Leadership, Student Voice & Curriculum Enrichment

At St Augustine’s we aim to enable and empower our students to “be the best they can be” not only through achieving academic excellence, but also by supporting them to develop a wide range of transferable skills, a lifelong love of learning, and a commitment to enriching our community.

Student leadership and voice form a key part of our curriculum enrichment offer and are embedded within our wider school vision of Faith, Hope and Love. We strongly believe that students should be given meaningful opportunities to lead, contribute, and shape the life of the school.

Staff play a vital role in promoting and enabling student voice, whether through acting as link teachers to subject societies, supporting committees, or working closely with student leaders across the school.

We provide a wide range of structured leadership opportunities, including:

  • School Council representation through Form Captains
  • Charity, Eco, Wellbeing, and Sports Committees
  • Subject Societies and Academic Leadership roles
  • Peer mentoring and student support roles
  • School-wide initiatives and enrichment projects

In addition, departments support subject societies which extend learning beyond the classroom and encourage students to explore their academic interests in greater depth.

We are also proud to offer student leadership recognition through initiatives such as external leadership awards, which celebrate students who demonstrate outstanding commitment, responsibility, and positive contribution to the school community.

Aims of Student Leadership at St Augustine’s

  • To empower students to work in partnership with staff to shape school improvement
  • To develop leadership, communication, teamwork, and organisational skills
  • To provide opportunities for students to contribute to curriculum enrichment and school life
  • To prepare students for future study, employment, and active citizenship

Student leaders are appointed through a structured application and interview process, ensuring roles are allocated fairly and reflect student strengths and commitment.

Student Voice

Student voice is central to school development. The School Council, made up of Form Captains, meets regularly to raise issues, share ideas, and propose improvements which are discussed with Senior Leadership.

In addition, structured pastoral sessions ensure that every year group has regular opportunities to contribute their views on key themes linked to school values.

Student leadership feedback has directly influenced initiatives across the school, including enrichment events, environmental projects, and improvements to student facilities.

Our approach ensures open communication, shared responsibility, and meaningful student involvement in shaping the school community.
