Maths

Hello everyone.

My name is Ms Vekaria, I am a maths teacher. So what should you expect at St Augustine’s during your maths lesson? Well first I would like you to think about what you learn in maths... Jot your ideas down on a piece of paper.

Maths is a key skill and essential to everyday life.

In high school you will cover the following six categories:

  • Number
  • Algebra
  • Ratio, proportion and rates of change
  • Geometry and measure
  • Probability
  • Statistics

But maths in high school is about a lot more than this.
It is about connecting the topics together, being flexible, strategic and learning key skills to help solve problems. A wide range of mathematical activities, games and puzzles are used to help you learn.
You will learn more about money and how bank accounts work.

To help you learn you will be using an interactive online programme called My Maths. This helps you to build your confidence and practice maths at home more independently with online lessons and games.
You can also take part in a Junior Maths Challenge competition to help inspire a love of problem solving, giving you the opportunity to win certificates.

There are also opportunities during the year to use computer labs.
We hope that during your maths lessons you get an understanding of the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

I am sure that you are excited to embark on this journey of discovery with us and that you will enjoy learning Maths at St Augustine’s.

I am looking forward to seeing you all soon.
Ms Vekaria
